High Frequency Audiometry

Certain ototoxic drugs have been found to cause hearing loss, tinnitus ("ringing in the ear") and/or dizziness. As part of our audiology service, the Division offers high frequency audiometry, where hearing levels are measured in dB SPL at
8000, 10,000, 12,000, 14,000, 16,000 and 18,000 Hz. We obtain
baseline thresholds to document high frequency
hearing before the patient's physician administers drugs which are known to be potentially damaging to the ear. We then periodically monitor hearing thresholds in order to inform the physician if there are any changes in hearing. Should the patient's hearing worsen, a different drug may be used or the dosage may be
altered to minimize hearing loss.
